Maybe "Happy Star" is too boring of a title for this painting which, to me, has a lot of personality. I've worked on it off and on over three years. It has so many layers,  it's almost a sculpture. It was always important to me that I preserve the background, but it was so busy I had a hard time making the star come forward. The process was very much like when I painted portraits, and I've come to realize, that to me, a lot of the stars develop characters. I've even created characters that I didn't like and had to paint over them. But this character I love. She's very happy. She can't help it. I think maybe she was a circus performer before she became a painting.
