Flowers for Dilley

This painting is called "Flowers for Dilley" because while I worked on it, I was listening about the horrible conditions in the Texas, for-profit Dilley Immigration Processing Center where parents and children and others who aren't criminals are being held by the US Government.

Sunflowers always cheer me up, and I was wishing I could send some to the mom whose twin girls were having a birthday there after weeks (months?) of imprisonment.

That was a silly wish of course. There's not much we can do for migrants while they're incarcerated. But once they get deported, I know one place in Mexico -- in Morelia, Michoacan, (where I spend winters) -- that has welcomed migrants from Argentina, Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, and Venezuela. They're given a clean bed, clothes, three meals a day, medical care, safety, and help figuring out their next best options. All this is provided for $15 USD per person per day because they have a lot of volunteers, including me. I fundraise.

The Morelia Migrant Shelter's official name is Albergue Sagrado Corazón Pro Migrante IAP (Sacred Heart Pro Migrant Shelter). It gets no funds from the government or the church. All the money comes through donations, and we need more donors, because the use is growing.
